Feeling Overwhelmed? Choose One Next Step

Editorial Guide · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

When you are feeling overwhelmed by too much to do, put the tasks on paper and choose one that genuinely needs attention next. Separate urgent consequences from the pressure to finish everything. The aim of this exercise is to make one decision easier, not to squeeze more work into an already full day.

Begin by reducing the decision in front of you. You do not need a perfect plan for the whole week. You need a workable choice about the next task and an honest view of what cannot fit today.

Make a smaller list

  1. Write down the tasks competing for your attention, using a few words for each.
  2. Mark anything with a genuine consequence if it is not handled today. Check the actual deadline rather than assuming everything is urgent.
  3. Choose one first action, such as opening a form or asking for a missing detail. Put the other tasks out of view while you begin.

An everyday example

You need groceries, an overdue reply and a document for tomorrow. The document may need attention first, but the first step could be simply checking which information is missing. A short message requesting that information is a useful start; you do not have to complete the entire document immediately.

When the workload really is too large

Organisation cannot create unlimited time. Consider asking for help, renegotiating a deadline or explicitly dropping a lower-priority task. Rest and support may matter more than another productivity technique.

Open MoodFlip and choose the available feeling closest to your experience. Try a suitable suggested action, then return to the one task you selected.
